See More... (Anderson, Alexander) Pomeroy, Jane R. ALEXANDER ANDERSON, 1775-1870, WOOD ENGRAVER AND ILLUSTRATOR, AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY.
3 Volumes New Castle, DE and Worcester, MA Oak Knoll Press and the American Antiquarian Society 2005 8.5 x 11 inches hardcover w/ slip case 2600 pages
First Edition. This three volume, comprehensive bibliography focuses on the important American wood engraver, Alexander Anderson (1775-1870). The author has selected over 1,000 of Anderson's engravings to illustrate this major bibliography. This work begins with a well written and researched biography of Anderson. There are over 2,322 entries. By the early nineteenth century, Alexander Anderson was recognized as this country's preeminent illustrator. Called the father of wood engraving in America, and one of its masters, his prodigious work filled publications of every kind: separate prints, almanacs, fiction, travel, children's books, poetry, Bibles, religious tracts, medical texts, and broadsides. He is noted for his warm and often slyly humorous depictions of children in the large number of juvenile publications that he illustrated. The growing number of wood engravers and illustrators who followed Anderson owed a debt to his skill and universally acclaimed artistic sense. He set a standard for successors who worked in the medium he had introduced.

This study names and analyzes the publications where Anderson's work can be found. There are three indices provided, one of authors and titles, a second of printers, publishers and booksellers, and a third of artists and engravers. Libraries, museums, book collectors and dealers, and all those interested in graphic arts will be able to identify Anderson's work and add to the history of American nineteenth-century book illustration. No understanding of American illustration is complete without an examination of Anderson's appealing and masterly engravings.

Co-published with The American Antiquarian Society.

See More... (Bewick, Thomas) Tattersfield, Nigel THOMAS BEWICK, THE COMPLETE ILLUSTRATIVE WORK
3 volumes. New Castle, Delaware and London Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2011 7.5 x 10.75 inches Hardcover, slipcase 1580 pages
Thomas Bewick can be called one of the best English exponents of wood engraving. Born in 1753, he grew up on a small farm, where his chores came second to his interest in the countryside, fishing, and watching birds and animals. These early passions set the stage for his future endeavors.

His early work of cutting soft wood for woodcuts eventually turned into fine detailed designs into hard wood. Beginning in the late 1700s onwards, Thomas illustrated many children's books with one of his most famous books, The History of British Birds. The book contained bird engravings and wood cuts and was an immediate success. Other major publications that helped solidify Bewick's success include The Chillingham Bull, Waiting for Death, A General History of Quadrupeds, and The Fables of Aesop and Others.

Bewick's celebrated histories of quadrupeds and birds of 1790, 1797, and 1804 have obscured the immense number of other books of all denominations illustrated in his modest workshop. From its inception in 1765 until its demise in 1849, the workshop provided illustrations to books, pamphlets, periodicals, and newspapers. The range of illustrations encompassed natural histories, children's storybooks, cookery books, religious tracts, spelling books, mathematical treatises, Bibles, agricultural manuals, local town and county histories, joke books, and even a book of sermons.

Generously illustrated and arranged alphabetically, this book details some 750 titles, over 450 of which are unrecorded in earlier bibliographies. In addition it provides sections on newspaper mastheads, book cover designs, copy-book covers, maps, and large single prints. Whether appealing to the Bewick aficionado, book historian, art historian, provincial printing enthusiast, or admirer of engraving on wood or copper, this will be an indispensable work.

Nigel Tattersfield is the author of Bookplates by Beilby and Bewick, published by Oak Knoll Press and The British Library and John Bewick: Engraver on Wood, published by Oak Knoll Press.

New York The Grolier Club 1984 7 x 10 inches hardcover 146 pages
Books and Prints, Past and Future is a collection of papers delivered at the Grolier Club's centennial celebration in 1984. These speeches were given during the course of three seminars and the final dinner of the convocation. The first seminar, devoted to retrospective essays, kicked off with an essay by Mary Hyde, the first woman elected to membership at the Grolier Club. G. Thomas Tanselle was next to present an essay, and Robert C. Darnton was the third speaker. The second set of presentations was based off the understanding that the Grolier Club took its origin after a period of neglect. The last seminar contained speeches on the future prospects of the book, given by Robert Giroux, James Thorpe, and Benjamin Compaine. In all the speeches, there was a consistent effort to see present-day collecting in the frame provided by collections of the past. These sets of speeches were delivered by Andrew Robison, Walter Bareiss, Eberhard Kornfield, and Frank Stella. The final and closing essay was delivered by Daniel Bell who provided a schematic framework for the "information revolution."

See More... Brandt, William H. INTERPRETIVE WOOD-ENGRAVING: THE STORY OF THE SOCIETY OF AMERICAN WOOD-ENGRAVERS
New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2009 11.75 x 12.75 inches Hardcover, dust jacket 204 pages
In the late nineteenth century, wood-engraving was the principle medium of illustration employed by publishers. From this beginning, print collector Bill Brandt goes on to recount the story of the Society of American Wood-Engravers. He reveals the medium's intricacies, the controversies sparked between traditional wood-engravers and America's New School, and the international acclaim rightly bestowed on these innovative American artists.

The lost art of interpretive wood-engraving comes to life in Brandt's detailed account. Using tools the size of dental instruments, the movement's talented and resourceful men and women engraved award-winning works of art - both interpretations of famous masterpieces and striking original works. The fifty prints reproduced on these pages, scanned from Brandt's extensive collection with most produced at full size, highlight the astonishing skill and painstaking craftsmanship required of a wood-engraving artist of the golden age.

The author profiles many leading personalities on the American wood-engraving scene, including Alexander Anderson, a New York doctor who became the father of American wood-engraving; William J. Linton, a talented English wood-engraver who led the Old School's relentless but unsuccessful charge against New School engraving techniques; Anna Botsford Comstock, who created hundreds of original wood-engraved book illustrations from nature; General Rush C. Hawkins, a Civil War figure who, as U.S. Commissioner on Art, secured the prominent display of American wood-engravings at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris; Timothy Cole, who traveled through Europe creating wood-engraved interpretations of paintings by the old masters; and Elbridge Kingsley, whose revolutionary direct-from-nature wood-engravings were created in rural New England from his horse-drawn sketching car. Includes over eighty illustrations, and printed in an edition of 600 numbered books.

Brandt tells how the Society of American Wood-Engravers burned brightly for almost twenty years, and then faded away in the early days of photoreproductions. Readers, glimpsing the warm glow of a remarkable era, will take pride in this little-known period of American art history.

Bill Brandt has served on the boards of directors of the American Historical Print Collectors Society, the Northwest Print Council, and the Friends of the Vivian and Gordon Gilkey Center for Graphic Arts at the Portland Art Museum.

New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press & The British Library 2006 9 x 12 inches hardcover, dust jacket 320 pages
When was it that someone decided that books might be written and published for child readers? It's fair to say that some kinds of text-alphabets, fables, the Lord's Prayer, may have been seen as fundamental to the process of learning to read from the beginning of book making, but when did children come to be seen as a readership for whom special provision should be made? The child as the audience for books in the English language is the subject of this bibliographical study, which had its origins in an exhibition held at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. From this beginning, Felix de Marez Oyens and Brian Alderson have compiled Be Merry and Wise and shown how certain creative talents, driven by a sense of purpose, or a wish to make some money, attempted to appeal directly to children, and how the publishing industry came to realize that this audience might prove to constitute a profitable market.
In conducting their survey, which is centered upon the books themselves, mostly drawn from the holdings of the Morgan Library, the authors not only plot the chronological development of children's book publishing from almost random beginnings to the diversity of the early Victorian period, they also show how publishers adapted their trade methods to exploit this new market. Sweetness and light did not prevail everywhere, but, even in some of the most forbidding examples presented here, there was a commercial optimism that both merriment and wisdom might be happily combined, within the pages of children's literature. Co-published with the Pierpont Morgan Library, The Bibliographical Society of America, and The British Library.

New Castle, Delaware, Pinner and London, England Oak Knoll Press, The Private Libraries Association, The British Library 2010 7.25 x 10.75 inches Hardcover, dust jacket 224 pages
The 1860s are considered the "Golden Age" of illustrated periodicals, a time when the "knockabout" humor of the 1840s, which was dominated by illustrators such as Cruikshank, Doyle, and Phiz, gave way to a more considered style grounded in serious artistic principles, allowing for deeper expression and emotion in artistic output. The first book of its kind, Illustrated Periodicals of the 1860s, focuses extensively on the illustrated magazine as a distinct form.

Illustrated Periodicals provides a new and informative approach to the study of "sixties" periodicals, revealing the previously unstudied area of the complex interrelationships between the various parties involved in the production of these magazines: publishers, editors, artists, engravers, and authors. The book considers the effects of these relationships on creative output, both artistic and literary, and in so doing provides a detailed, historical reconstruction of the essential character of the periodicals of that era. The book includes over 120 reproductions of engravings and preparatory drawings, almost all of them original size.

Additionally, the text contains two appendices; the first includes a reflection of the work that goes into collecting and researching these periodicals. The second lists the key illustrators, engravers, publishers, editors, as well as magazines mentioned throughout the text, each including a brief description. This work is an informative and colorful choice for those interested in the history of periodicals, the production of magazines, and art.

Simon Cooke has written widely on the subject of Victorian art and literature. He received his doctorate from Exeter and his teaching qualifications from the Open University and the University of Leicester. Cooke is currently a teacher of English language and literature.

The exhibition that formed the basis for this catalogue was commissioned by the Ginza Graphic Gallery in Tokyo in 1996 and drawn from the Fairleigh Dickinson University Library's Emma Dana Collection, as well as private collections. The exhibition and resulting catalogue examine one stream in Czech publishing between the wars - the work of the avant-garde. The examples on display demonstrate the links between Czech artists and the European avant-garde, which largely inspired them, and also make clear the Czechs' own special contributions to the international avant-garde movement. In addition, the exhibition places the work of the Czech avant-garde in context by the inclusion of a number of works by artists working in more traditional styles.

Volume 1: Inferno. Volume 2: Purgatorio. Volume 3: Paradiso. Translated by Robert and Jean Hollander, Illustrated by Monika Beisner. Verona, Italy Edizioni Valdonega 2007 8.5 x 12.25 inches cloth, slipcase 700 pages
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is one of the leading figures of world literature. His Commedia, probably written during the last 15 years of his life is - by common consent - the greatest literary work in the Italian language; it is also one of the towering achievements in any field of human endeavor. Often translated (and into many languages), the Comedy (the adjective "Divine" was added by an editor to the author's title in 1555) attracts new readers every year. This translation--a labor of love and the first ever by two poets--was begun in Florence in 1997 and completed in Hopewell in 2006.
This new edition of Dante's great work brings together for the first time the three volumes of the Hollander translation with the art of internationally recognized illustrator Monika Beisner. Beisner has created 100 detailed paintings for this publication, making her the first woman credited with illustrating the entire work. The set begins with an introduction by Carlo Carena and a foreword by Academy Award winning actor Roberto Benigni, known for his lectures and dramatic recitations of Dante's poem. The third volume ends with an appreciation by writer and cultural historian Marina Warner entitled "Monika Beisner: Illuminating Stories." Warner writes, "The hundred miniatures took her seven years to complete and the achievement is dazzling. The present volume reproduces her work full-size, with no strokes or drawing visible, but a pure glow of dense color, applied with brushes so small they consist of a half-dozen sable hairs. Monika Beisner has been scrupulously loyal to Dante's text, rendering gesture and position as described in the poem as well as its unsurpassed precision of spatial, geographical and temporal coordinates."
Monika Beisner was born in Germany, where she studied painting in Braunschweig and Berlin. Fellowships allowed her to continue her studies in New York and London, where she now lives. Her illustrations for children's books have earned her an international reputation and she has exhibited worldwide. Her illustrations of Dante's Commedia have been published in Germany and Italy. She has completed illustrations for Ovid's Metamorphoses. Her next step will be into the world of Gilgamesh.
Jean Hollander has taught literature and writing at various colleges and universities. Her third book of poems will be published later this year. In addition to this translation, she has published translations of works by Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. Robert Hollander, Professor in European Literature, Emeritus, at Princeton University, has published a dozen books and some eighty articles on Dante and/or Boccaccio. He is founder and director of two Internet sites, the Dartmouth Dante Project and the Princeton Dante Project.
The three volumes-Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso-are bound in full cloth with a dust jacket and are in a cloth-covered slipcase. The work has been set in Centaur and printed in a limited edition of 500 numbered copies. The first seventy-five are available as a deluxe issue, accompanied by an extra suite of illustrations, on Gardapat Kassica paper by Cartiere del Garda, numbered with roman numerals, signed by the artist, and boxed in a portfolio. The complete production has been carried out in Verona by Stamperia Valdonega Group. Distributed for Edizioni Valdonega, Verona.

New Castle Oak Knoll Press and the American Historical Print Collectors Society 2008 8.5 x 11 inches cloth with dustjacket 192 pages
As a copperplate engraver, Amos Doolittle (1754-1832) played an important role during the American colonies' war for independence and the early years of the new nation. He completed his apprenticeship in New Haven, Connecticut, around 1770 and continued to work actively in that city for over sixty years. His first known attempts are the views of the battles of Lexington and Concord--four plates that he engraved, printed and published in 1775. Even today, Doolittle's first attempt, although crude in workmanship, continues to be often reproduced.
Doolittle did general engraving and printing throughout his career. Maps for atlases and illustrations for books became his specialty, but he also engraved maps and broadsides that were published separately. Scholars have identified more than 600 Doolittle engravings, both signed and unsigned. During the course of his career, one of Doolittle's major accounts was with Philadelphia publisher Mathew Carey (1760-1839). This book contains excerpts from correspondence between the two, never published before, which reveal much about business practices of the time.

This book was written to complement similar works on Doolittle's contemporaries, including Paul Revere. There are chapters on various types of his work, including his tune-books, maps, illustrations, bank notes and more. The book also includes two useful appendices, cataloguing books containing his engravings and references to him and his work. Co-published with the American Historical Print Collectors Society, Amos Doolittle is a valuable contribution to the study of American engravings.

Stroud Catalpa Press 1983 tall 8vo. cloth. 206 pages.
First edition. Volume 2 in The Artist and the Critic Series. The book illustrations and paintings of Richard Doyle (1824-1883) are populated by sprightly visions of fairy nymphs, elves and knights in search of their fair damsels. As `Dickey Doyle' and later `Dick Kitcat,' he produced a series of impressive boyhood triumphs from the now famous DICK DOYLE'S JOURNAL of 1840 to his first published work, THE EGLINTON TOURNAMENT. Doyle's talent for fantasy with pen and ink attracted Mr. Punch who offered him a place on his staff at age 19. There, alongside John Leech, he produced a seven year output of inimitable grotesques, borders, a new PUNCH cover, parodies of social events and the American Gold Rush, and his one overwhelming popular success, `The Foreign Tour of Brown, Jones and Robinson.'
All seemed set for a lifetime of success at PUNCH until the paper attacked the Pope and the Catholic Church, deeply upsetting Doyle's Catholic upbringing. He resigned in 1850 and turned his back on a comfortable future for the uncertain life of the freelance illustrator and painter. This he pursued with half-hearted dedication for the remaining 33 years of his life. This important reference book has been compiled from much unpublished material, including delightful boyhood letters Doyle wrote to his father and letters to famous friends like Dickens, Thackeray and Rossetti. It contains the first complete list of Doyle's illustrations for books and magazines and a list of his paintings.

Revised by D. Steven Corey and Julia Mackenzie. Winchester St Paul's Bibliographies 1991 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. xv, 368 pages.
Decades have passed since the death of Eric Gill (1882-1940) and yet the reputation of this remarkable artist and thinker continues to grow. Famous for his stone carving, wood engraving, type designs and writing, he has also found a wide appeal amongst a younger generation who are sympathetic to his outlook on life - to "make a cell of good living in the chaos of our world." Since the original bibliography by Gill's brother, Evan, was published in 1953, a great deal of new material has come to light in the fine collections built up in the USA and elsewhere in recent years, and this new edition is a complete revision of the original bibliography. It includes not only all the new discoveries but also the material published on Gill in the last thirty-eight years. The number of bibliographical entries has increased by over one third in this greatly expanded work. The book has been redesigned with advice from Gill's nephew, Christopher Skelton, placing greater emphasis on the illustrations, which have been either retaken from the original editions or introduced as completely new ones of bibliographical interest.

New Castle, DE Oak Knoll Press 2003 small 4to. cloth, dust jacket 288 pages
First edition. The Golden Cockerel Press, one of the foremost publishers of illustrated books, was the most important and productive of the English private presses during the period of 1920-1960. This notable work is the first extensive study of the press, based on interviews and the Press' widely-scattered archives. Richly illustrated with sixteen pages of color illustrations and over 150 black-and-white illustrations, this work delves into the history of the press and discusses and assesses its important private press books. Closely associated with the revival of wood-engraving, the Golden Cockerel Press books were vehicles for the work of such artists as Robert Gibbings, Eric Gill, David Jones, Agnes Miller Parker, Eric Ravilious, John Buckland-Wright and others. Unlike other fine presses that succumbed to the Depression or closed during the Second World War, Golden Cockerel continued to produce outstanding books. The Press' literary achievement was as significant as its artistic contribution through its publication of original manuscripts by writers such as H.E. Bates, A.E. Coppard and T.E. Lawrence. New Castle, Delaware & London, England & Middlesex, England Oak Knoll Press & The British Library & Private Libraries Association 2005 7 x 12 inches Hardcover, dust jacket 337 pages
First edition. John Everett Millais is admired as one of the most celebrated of Pre-Raphaelite painters. Perhaps less known is the major contribution he made both to book and periodical illustration between 1852 and 1883. Many of these book illustrations remain little known today, largely due to the fact that they are scattered in hundreds of 19th century books and periodicals. This important new work brings together over 300 examples of Millais illustrations, enabling this part of his work to be viewed and appreciated by new generations. This work will be an important reference to any scholar interested in Victorian book illustration.
Paul Goldman was a curator in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. He is the author of Victorian Illustrated Books 1850-1870 - The Heyday of Wood-Engraving (British Museum Press, 1994) and Victorian Illustration - The Pre-Raphaelites, The Idyllic School and The High Victorians (Scolar Press, 1996). See More... Homer (as translated by Alexander Pope) THE ILIAD AND ODYSSEY OF HOMER AS TRANSLATED BY ALEXANDER POPE, IN GREEK AND ENGLISH. WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY STEVEN SHANKMAN AND 52 ORIGINAL COLOR DRAWINGS BY AVERY LAWRENCE .
2 volumes. Chestertown Chester River Press 2009 12.5 x 14.5 inches cloth, dust jackets, slipcase 550; 434 pages
Acclaimed by Samuel Johnson as "a performance which no age or nation could hope to equal," Alexander Pope's translation of the Iliad and Odyssey stands as one of the glories of English Literature.

The Chester River Press edition of the Iliad and Odyssey of Homer has been designed and printed to reflect the epic proportions of this famous translation and offers both the Greek and English translations for the general reader and scholar alike. More than 50 color drawings in Greek vase styles by Avery Lawrence were commissioned by the Press. Each drawing portrays a specific scene from each of the 48 books making up the Iliad and Odyssey with smaller medallions adorning pages throughout.

An original two-part Introduction by the esteemed Pope scholar, Steven Shankman, reflects on and investigates Pope's majestic poems through a scholarly lens focused on the timless Homeric themes of war and peace. Professor Shankman also elaborates on "How To Read Homer," an aid to understanding the philosophical and historical context of the Homeric epics.

The Iliad and Odyssey are presented as a companion, slipcased set and bound in black Dutch cloth with dust jackets.

See More... (Housman, Laurence) Engen, Rodney K. LAURENCE HOUSMAN.
Stroud Catalpa Press 1983 4to. cloth. 157, (6) pages.
First edition. Volume 1 in The Artist and the Critic Series. The spirited, prolific career of Laurence Housman (1865-1959) was that of one of the most enigmatic, talented, skillful polymaths of the late-Victorian period. His drawings of fairies and elegant, Pre-Raphaelite women were admired for their evocative, atmospheric qualities, while his critics dismissed them as borrowed from William Blake, William Morris and the more devilish aspects of Beardsley. He was a draughtsman and book designer, who turned to writing verse, fantasy stories, novels, essays and scandalous plays on the royals. The pioneer feminist, pacifist and socialist, Housman was as outspoken as he was enchanting. His life and work is an invaluable reflection of the taste and popular opinions of an early twentieth century anxious to shrug off the mantle of the Victorians. Yet Housman himself remained a true Victorian to the end. He was the prophet of fantasy: the pure, simple guide through a rapidly confused and complicated world. This important reference work contains a biography, a complete annotated bibliography and reprints of critical essays on Housman.
