3 volumes. New York Burt Franklin n.d. large 8vo. cloth. (ii),ix,(iii),1030; (iv),1061-2188; (iv),655+(1) pages.
Burt Franklin reprint (their Bibliography and Reference series, no. 47) of the original 1870 and 1877 works published by the South Kensington Museum in London. See Besterman 523 for the original. In the 1860's, the Kensington Museum decided to publish a kind of union catalogue of "books on art," based on library holdings in England and elsewhere. To be included were books on "Painting, Sculpture, Architecture; on Mosaics, Enamels; hand-wrought utensils in all materials which show a decorative intention; on tombs, monuments bearing sculpture, and on decoration..." (preface by the editor, John Hungerford Pollen), along with other items of potential interest to art students, including illustrated editions of literary works. Music was excluded. In 1870, the Museum issued a kind of cumulated preliminary version, with about 60,000 entries, arranged simply by author/title in brief, unnumbered entries, with no systematic subject access or indexing. A supplementary volume in the same format, with about 18,000 entries, followed in 1877. With the bookplate and pencil signature of Gavin Bridson.

See More... (Baldwin, Christopher Columbus) Larkin, Jack and Caroline Sloat (editors) A PLACE IN MY CHRONICLE: A NEW EDITION OF THE DIARY OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS BALDWIN, 1829-1835.
Introduction and Transcription by Jack Larkin Worcester, Massachusetts American Antiquarian Society 2010 8.5 x 11.5 hardcover, dust jacket 322 pages
The text of Baldwin's diary is a virtual trip back in time, and this edition with its lively illustrations and helpful identification of the hundreds of people he meets along the way, takes the reader back into Massachusetts in the years between 1829 and 1835. Numerous illustrations and pictures expand the descriptions Baldwin gives readers in his entries. Additionally, Larkin and Sloat use footnotes to explain information, such as dates or places, that audiences may be unfamiliar with. Baldwin's entries detail a wide variety of subjects, including everyday occurrences, such as the weather and places he visited, as well as the obscure and unusual things that amused him. Also discussed are people Baldwin met (with an index in the back describing every person in detail) in addition to his feelings on important subjects, such as slavery and religion, and his passions for books and reading. Larkin and Sloat have restored Baldwin's diary to its most original form, including the format, style and language in which he wrote. Readers will have a thorough understanding of life in Massachusetts in the early republic after reading Baldwin's diary.

"The diaries of Christopher Columbus Baldwin have long been among the American Antiquarian Society's nineteenth-century treasures. Baldwin's 'chronicle' now has a modern edition worthy of its invaluable contents, richly illustrated and superbly annotated thanks to the labors of Jack Larkin and Caroline Sloat. In these pages, everyday life in central Massachusetts- courtship and death, career and travel- shares the stage with key national developments of the early republic, from party politics to temperance to phrenology. Through it all, Baldwin reveals the passion for reading and collecting books that made him AAS's ideal librarian at the time and a forebear to all the men and women who have built America's great research collections." - Scott Casper, professor of history, University of Nevada, Reno

See More... (British Library) INDEX TO THE ADDITIONAL MANUSCRIPTS, WITH THOSE OF THE EGERTON COLLECTION, PRESERVED IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM AND ACQUIRED IN THE YEARS 1783-1836.
London Printed by Order of the Trustees [of the Museum] 1849 large 4to. all but disbound. (iv), 514 pages.
Between the publication of the 1782 Ayscough catalogue and the inception of the Index to the Additions in 1836, the British Museum acquired about 5,000 manuscripts or manuscript sets. The Index to the Additions was not retroactive, and manuscript acquisitions from 1783 through 1835 had, therefore, no coverage in any printed catalogue until this gap was closed in 1849 by this "Index." The first 2,000 or so of the approximately 5,000 entries (numbered 5018 to 10,018) were taken from manuscript catalogues at the Museum, and most of the remaining 3,000 (post-1828) were extracted from the annual printed lists of donations and bequests, or from those of additions, with a few additional items. This resulted in a certain lack of uniformity in description, but the Museum felt that the problem was not serious enough to justify postponement (for editing) of this much-needed publication. Nineteenth century library markings. Pages 509-514 provided in photocopy facsimile. Front and rear boards detached, spine lacking. Boards heavily worn at edges and corners. First several pages detached. Some chipping to edges of title page. Soiled.
