See More... (Bookbinding) Carter, John BINDING VARIANTS WITH MORE BINDING VARIANTS IN ENGLISH PUBLISHING 1820 -1900.
With an introduction by Robert D. Fleck. New Castle, DE Oak Knoll Books 1989 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. (iv), xviii, (4), 172; x, 52 pages.
See S-K 7060 and 7074. Reprints Binding Variants in English Publishing 1820-1900(1932) and More Binding Variants(1938) in one volume. The first title was originally the sixth volume in the highly regarded ten volume Bibliographiaseries edited by Michael Sadleir. Along with Sadleir's The Evolution of Publishing Binding Styles, 1770-1900it has become one of the most difficult titles to procure. More Binding Variantsoriginally appeared in paper wrappers as part of a series entitled Aspects of Book-Collectingand has proven to be more elusive than the original work. These two important works trace the history of the development of the bindings with emphasis on how detective work can often yield interesting conclusions on the priority of issue for both the bibliographer and collector. The general study is followed by specific examples of Carter's research applied to an array of nineteenth century first editions. Included are works by Ainsworth, Bronte, Browning, Carroll, Collins, Dickens, Hunt, Meredith, Shelley, Stevenson, Trollope, and many others. Carter's comments on methods of dating bindings, library bindings, jobbing and remainder publishers, and other curious aspects of publishers' bindings are essential in the study of this subject. With 16 black and white illustrations. Jacket scuffed at bottom.
Price: $ 75.00 other currencies Order nr. 24762
