See More... (ad lib Press) Hopkinson, Francis PLAN FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE ART OF PAPER WAR
Richmond, VA ad lib Press 1990 8vo. stiff paper wrappers. (16) pages.
Reprint of the 1787 printing that occured in the American Musuem. Limited to 155 numbered copies; this copy is out of series. An article discussing American type faces and American type. Silver, in his THE AMERICAN PRINTER, p.146, says "In an essay printed in 1787 ... (Hopkinson) proposed an improvement in the art of printing, so as to make it expressive not only of the author's narrative, opinions, or arguments, but also of the peculiarities of his temper, the vivacity of his feelings .... Carey printed the essay with each type size displayed when Hopkinson referred to it; a description of a newspaper quarrel begins in long primer, the reply to follow in pica, the next artument in great primer, the retort in double pica, and so on, concluding with five-line pica, which indeed is as far as the art of printing, or a modern quarrel can well go."

See More... Hudson, Graham THE DESIGN AND PRINTING OF EPHEMERA IN BRITAIN AND AMERICA, 1720-1920.
New Castle, Delaware and London Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2008 8.5 x 11 inches Hardcover, dust jacket 160 pages
First edition. Ephemera has been collected for many years, but only recently has it become widely accepted as material for academic study. This is the first book to discuss ephemera as an aspect of design history, showing how function, production process and period have affected the changing appearance of billheads, trade cards, flyers, playbills and other ephemera. This book explores the closely interwoven printing histories of Britain and America. American colonial printers and engravers imported British type and equipment, took instruction from the same manuals and were guided by the same exemplars as their British counterparts, a relationship that continued through the first half of the nineteenth century. Following the Civil War, American graphic design and typography began to establish distinctive identities, with developments in color printing bringing an efflorescence of color-rich trade cards, cigar-box labels and other chromolithographed ephemera that was essentially American. Nevertheless, ideas continued to be shared across the Atlantic. American foundries devised entirely original typefaces that were imported into Britain, yet the development of expertise in designing with these new faces depended on printers learning from one another, and the scheme of specimen exchange that successfully achieved this was wholly devised and administered from London. Richly illustrated with letterforms, engravings, drawings and the reproduction of over 200 items of ephemera, many in full color, this is a book for collectors, students, design historians and all with an interest in the visual arts. Graham Hudson is secretary and a founding member of the Ephemera Society and a member of the Ephemera Society of America. His published articles on aspects of ephemeral printing include contributions to the Journal of the Printing Historical Society, Art Libraries Journal, the Journal of the Writing Equipment Society, Industrial Archaeology and numerous articles in The Ephemerist..

See More... Lane, John EARLY TYPE SPECIMENS IN THE PLANTIN-MORETUS MUSEUM, ANNOTATED DESCRIPTIONS OF THE SPECIMENS TO CA. 1850 (MOSTLY FROM THE LOW COUNTRIES AND FRANCE) WITH PRELIMINARY NOTES ON THE TYPEFOUNDRIES AND PRINTING OFFICES.
With a preface by Hendrik D.L. Vervliet New Castle and London Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2004 8.5"x 11" Hardcover, dust jacket 352 pages.
First edition. The Plantin-Moretus Museum has one of the world's richest collections of type specimens, many surviving nowhere else. They include types by Garamont, Granjon, Van den Keere, Briot, Van Dyck, Kis, Fournier, Rosart, Gillé, Didot and many other masters from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. Since the Plantin-Moretus printing office acquired most of the type specimens when new, moreover, the collection as a whole tells a story in a way that collections assembled piecemeal in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries cannot. Finally, the Museum's extraordinary archives help to document the origins of many specimens.
This first detailed catalogue of the Museum's specimens reports the styles and sizes of type shown, describes the structures and paper stocks, notes relations with other specimens in the collection and elsewhere, and provides references to literature on many of the individual types shown.
Preliminary notes on the type founders and printers who issued the specimens include chronologies of the foundries and information on the origins of their materials, sometimes supplemented with information about the history of the firms and the genealogy of the founders. Nearly all of the nineteen specimens illustrated at their original size appear here for the first time, and extensive indexes make this book a powerful reference tool for type specimen enthusiasts and printing historians. Contains fifteen illustrations and four rare facsimile specimen sheets inserted in the inside back cover. Co-published with The British Library.
