With a French Accent: American Lithography to 1860 from the American Antiquarian Society features five essays from Georgia B. Barnhill, Lauren B. Hewes, Catherine Wilcox-Titus, Marie-Stéphanie Delamaire, and Helena E. Wright that explore several topics of interest to scholars of American print publishing. Together, the essays examine the impact of French lithographic practice on the American lithographic industry and American visual culture; the circulation of French imagery in the United States with a case study on portraits of Napoleon and Lafayette; Goupil's French lithographs after American genre and history paintings; and the use of French lithographs in didactic displays at the Smithsonian Institution in the late nineteenth century.

The book explores the variations in quality among early American lithographs. The first essay by Georgia Barnhill closely looks at this phenomenon and examines the work of several academically-trained French lithographic artists who worked in New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, and Boston from the mid-1830s to 1860.

The essay by Lauren Hewes looks at the circulation of French imagery in the United States. Some lithographs in the American Antiquarian Society collection were published in France for an American market, and there is a selection of sentimental prints and portraits that were printed in the United States, but were French in derivation. The book provides reasoning for why prints of Napoleon and Lafayette were moved into the American culture. Using the paintings and prints of these two political leaders as a case study, Catherine Wilcox-Titus reveals the importance of lithography to the dissemination of fine art to a large mass audience.

Next, the essay by Marie-Stéphanie Delamaire considers how the American paintings reproduced by Goupil, Vibert and Company led to the transatlantic cultural understanding and exchange. Because Goupil published so many lithographs for American and European audiences, he is an important part of the link between French and American lithography. The last essay by Helena Wright provides thoughts on the afterlife of French lithographs in American culture and the collecting and use of French lithographs in the United States National Museum.

Illustrated with black-and-white and color prints, this publication will be an excellent resource for the study of American prints and the French influence on the development of early lithography in the United States.

First edition. Writing over fifty years ago, the bibliographer Percy Muir noted that the 'immediate post-Bewick period' had been 'unduly neglected,' and this is still true today. In this major new study, John Buchanan-Brown remedies this neglect and demonstrates the importance of the period from 1820 to 1860 in the history of the illustrated book. These years saw the establishment of the technique of end-grain wood-engraving as the dominant medium of graphic reproduction. Its great advantage was that, as a relief process, it could reproduce both the image and the text simultaneously, and this allowed the publishing industry to feed what had become an insatiable appetite for illustrated books and journals.
Although end-grain engraving was an English phenomenon, it was the French who first applied the process to book design. In turn, German illustrators were to influence the style of British illustrators. Thus, wood-engraving naturally plays a leading role in this study, but it does not overshadow the other means of graphic reproduction employed during this period: lithography, chromolithography, and steel-engraving and etching.
The study illustrates the work of French and German artists and their influence upon their British counterparts. The pioneering study also includes appendices on aspects of wood- and steel-engraving in England, notes on French and German illustrators, and a glossary of technical terms. It is illustrated by some 250 reproductions in black-and-white, and eight pages in color.

First edition of the French translation done by Sarah Davids. A grammar of the Turkish language with a preliminary discourse and Ottoman Turkish excerpts with translations. In the discourse, Davids (1811-1832) argues that the Turks are a separate, honorable, and intelligent race with a beautiful and complex language. Davids' writings were translated into Turkish in 1851, and the historian Bernard Lewis writes that this book, "made the Turks imagine themselves as having a distinct nationality and independence." Also contains five lithographs illustrating excerpts from ancient and modern Turkish texts by the early English lithographer Joseph Netherclift. (see Twyman, Early Lithographed Bookspages 236-239). Netherclift had been producing lithographic work in London since around 1820, and as Twyman states became "the leading producer of lithographed facsimiles in Britain," until he was succeeded by his son in 1855. Multiple tables with French, phonetic Turkish pronunciation, and Turkish script. Wear to head and tail of spine with some small holes to rear hinge. Minor discoloration to boards.
