New Castle, Delaware, and London, England Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2009 7.5 x 9.75 inches Hardcover, 2 volumes 1,876 pages in 2 volumes, plus index on CD-ROM
This superbly comprehensive and detailed bibliography of the British book trade, the product of research in over three hundred libraries in the UK and USA, supersedes all bibliographies on British authors and authorship, bibliography itself, book collecting, bookbinding, book illustration, bookselling, censorship, copyright, libraries, literacy, papermaking, printing, publishing, textual criticism, and typography until 1890. More than 24,000 items (notably articles in trade journals) are lightly annotated and arranged in classified chronological order to illustrate the social and technological development of British book crafts and industries. Items are minutely indexed on the accompanying CD-ROM. Large areas of the history and practices of the British book trades are opened to scholarly study for the first time. British Book Trade, 1475-1890 belongs in every research library: no-one who works in the fields of British literature, bibliography, or book trade history should neglect this work.

Trevor Howard-Hill is Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. Besides his many publications on Shakespearean texts, Renaissance dramatic manuscripts, and textual scholarship are eight volumes of the Index of British Literary Bibliography (Oxford 1969-99).

Published by Oak Knoll Press and The British Library, in association with The Bibliographical Society and The Bibliographical Society of America.

See More... Laurentius, Theo and Frans WATERMARKS 1650-1700 FOUND IN THE ZEELAND ARCHIVES
`t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2008 9 x 12.5 inches cloth. 354 pages.
The seventeenth century is an underrepresented period in the publications on watermarks. A growing demand in the fields of history and art history for exact dating of documents and artworks on seventeenth century paper was one of the main reasons for the authors to conduct research in this area.
This book is based on the `Ingekomen Stukken` (`Received Pieces`) of the Staten van Zeeland (States of Zeeland), carefully collected per year and preserved in the Zeeland Archives in Middelburg. In order to reproduce the watermarks in actual size, as was the case in volume 1600-1650, `Soft X-ray` equipment developed by Dr. Jan van Aken (emeritus professor dental radiology of the University of Utrecht) was used.<BR>With 1221 black and white and 7 full colour true size photographs and detailed descriptions Watermarks 1650-1700 found in the Zeeland Archives gives together with the first volume (Watermarks 1600-1650 found in the Zeeland Archives) a long awaited overview of the watermarks and the types of paper that where available in The Netherlands in the 17th century.
An indispensable tool for all those who are interested in paper, economy, history and art-history. With 1228 illustrations of which 7 full color.

Sales rights: Available outside North America from HES & DE GRAAF Publishers.

Price: $ 980.00 other currencies Order nr. 103230

See More... (Papermaking) Gravell, Thomas L. and George Miller CATALOGUE OF AMERICAN WATERMARKS, 1690-1835.
New York Garland Publishing Inc. 1979 4to. cloth. xxxiii, 230 pages.
First edition. A landmark book on American watermarks with 734 reproductions of watermarks and biographical information on the producers of each along with their dates and locations. Over 200 paper mills are described from the 1690's to the 1830's. A new, distortion-free reproduction technique, developed by Gravell, is used to accurately reproduce the watermarks photographically. Each watermark is photographed with a scale-size indicator as well. Watermarks can be important in establishing approximate dates for undated manuscripts; Gravell and Miller show that approximately 95% of the paper they examined was used within six years of the date of manufacture. The book contains a selective bibliography, an index of watermark subjects, and an index of proper names. Oak Knoll published a second edition.
