Williams became the second person appointed consul to New Zealand from the United States, and his journals reveal a great deal about the early history, geology, botany, and wildlife of the newly-colonized land. The text includes the journal itself along with an extensive introductory section on the life of John B. Williams and eight plates related to the contents of the journal. The glassine wrapper is slightly chipped and frayed with a small closed tear at the top fore-edge.

John M. Raymond at the opening of the Salem Public Library, June 26, 1889, with a brief historical sketch of the movement for the establishment of such a library in Salem, and a notice of the libraries now in the city. With a photograph of the library and assorted citizens posing by its entrance as frontispiece. All volumes worn at extremities, some boards detached, but all pages intact, a few issued in wrappers. Ex-library copies from the Mercantile Library Philadelphia. Library stamp on a number of pages.
