See More... (Doubleday, F.N.) Doubleday, F.N. Two Letters to Samuel A. Everitt
New York n.p. 1908 11" x 8 1/2" 5 single sheets 3; 2 pages printed on recto
Two letters to Samuel Everitt signed F.N.D. (Frank Nelson Doubleday) typed on the Doubleday, Page & Co letterhead. Samuel Everitt was the treasurer of Doubleday, Page & Co. In the letters, dated February 3, 1908 and February 20, 1908, Doubleday relates the latest news to Everitt, who was on vacation in Florida. The letters give an interesting first-hand look at the depressed economy at the beginning of the 20th century and its effects on the publishing industry. Doubleday describes a run threatened on the Fourteenth Street Bank and the steps he had to take to avert this disaster. He also mentions works soon to be published by Mrs. Humphrey Ward (suffragette Mary Augusta Ward) and Doubleday and Everitt's friend, president of Doubleday, Page & Co. Walter Hines Page, who published a book called The Southerner anonymously in 1909. Both letters have additional handwritten notes from Doubleday on the final pages. Four of the five sheets have small closed tears on the left edge, and the first page of the February 3rd letter is worn at the top edge. Otherwise, all are clear and readable.
