A complete, but condensed, list of all the separate works in the library up to the time of publication. It is a subject analysis of the books arranged in alphabetical and sub-alphabetical order of topics, broken up into as minute divisions as the amount of material on hand seemed to render necessary, with a copious alphabetical index for ready reference to any desired topic. A Mercantile Library Co. bookplate is on the front pastedown and a library stamp is on the title page and page 3 and 5. A two inch portion of the top of the spine is lacking and chipped at the bottom. Corners bumped and very yellowed with age.

Art Books 1950-1979 is the first volume published in this series, which is a bibliography with some 37,0000 books on the visual arts which are indexed under approximately 14,000 subject headings, with full searching information for each title listed. There are separate author and title indexes, each of which refers to the complete entries in the subject index. Art Books 1876-1949 is an even more comprehensive work, which contains over one hundred years of Library of Congress Catalogueing, and list over 21,000 books by subject, with additional indexes by author and title. The second volume also includes an international index to 2600 serial publications. The third volume (1980-1984) contains about 9,600 titles. All volumes are a valuable cumulation of retrospective material based on the American Book Publishing Record data base.
