See More... (Carter, John) Dickinson, Donald C. JOHN CARTER, THE TASTE & TECHNIQUE OF A BOOKMAN
New Castle Oak Knoll Press 2004 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. 422 pages.
First edition. Preface by Sebastian Carter. Throughout his professional career, John Carter, 1905-1975, was recognized as one of the most important figures in the Anglo-American book world. He was known as an imaginative book dealer, a creative bibliographer and a stylish and thoughtful writer. In 1934, after working for several years in the London book trade, he achieved instant fame, along with his co-author Graham Pollard, for An Enquiry into the Nature of Certain Nineteenth Century Pamphlets, a brilliant piece of detective work that exposed Thomas J. Wise.
Carter quickly built up a circle of friends, including Frederich Melcher, the editor of Publishers' Weekly and Elmer Adler, the editor of The Colophon. With those useful connections, he was able to publish over a dozen articles on bibliography and the rare book trade before he was thirty years old. Critics agreed that Carter's writing was characterized by precision, elegance and wit. Among his best known publications were Taste & Technique of Book Collecting and his popular glossary, ABC for Book Collectors. He was, above all, an articulate spokesman for the pleasures and challenges of book collecting. Contains a full checklist of John Carter's publications. Well-illustrated. This work will be appreciated by all bibliophiles who are interested in 20th century bibliophilia.

See More... Chanin, Eileen BOOK LIFE: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF DAVID SCOTT MITCHELL.
New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2012 6 x 9.25 inches paperback 496 pages
Australia's greatest book collector, David Scott Mitchell, gave his extraordinary library and a bequest for its development to the people of Sydney and the world. Book Life: The Life and Times of David Scott Mitchell, by Eileen Chanin, is the first comprehensive account of his life and collecting, told through books, readings, and contemporary correspondence.

Mitchell was a man of astoundingly diverse interests whose collection was not merely for show or posterity, but was, in fact, his own personal reading library. Thus, we can learn much about him by examining his books. Previously labeled as an enigma and portrayed as recluse, Mitchell's true self is revealed through this book. Many books in his collection were written by people he knew, and letters reveal a more socially connected Mitchell than ever seen before. Chanin also delves into the historical events he lived through and their impact on his life and collection.

The growth of Australia from an island of criminals to a legitimate nation happened almost literally during Mitchell's lifetime. Mitchell collected books on Australian history before it was even studied at Melbourne University. Without his contributions, it is unlikely that a full history of Australia could be written.

In the foreword, Bob Carr, former Premier of New South Wales, praises Mitchell's benevolence and hails the Mitchell Library as the "DNA of Australia." The story of his life and collection is important to the story of Australia as a nation and is "in danger of slipping from history."

This book features dozens of color illustrations and black-and-white photographs. Also included are notes, bibliography, index, a list of dramatis personae and several family trees.

The first edition sold out within six months - ahead of news that the book was awarded the 2011 Alex Buxo Prize and shortlisted for the prestigious Waverley Library Award for Literature sponsored by the Copyright Agency Limited's Cultural Fund. The book was also one of five books shortlisted for the 2012 Magarey Medal for Biography, awarded by the Australian Historical Association.

New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press & The British Library 2006 9 x 12 inches hardcover, dust jacket 320 pages
When was it that someone decided that books might be written and published for child readers? It's fair to say that some kinds of text-alphabets, fables, the Lord's Prayer, may have been seen as fundamental to the process of learning to read from the beginning of book making, but when did children come to be seen as a readership for whom special provision should be made? The child as the audience for books in the English language is the subject of this bibliographical study, which had its origins in an exhibition held at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. From this beginning, Felix de Marez Oyens and Brian Alderson have compiled Be Merry and Wise and shown how certain creative talents, driven by a sense of purpose, or a wish to make some money, attempted to appeal directly to children, and how the publishing industry came to realize that this audience might prove to constitute a profitable market.
In conducting their survey, which is centered upon the books themselves, mostly drawn from the holdings of the Morgan Library, the authors not only plot the chronological development of children's book publishing from almost random beginnings to the diversity of the early Victorian period, they also show how publishers adapted their trade methods to exploit this new market. Sweetness and light did not prevail everywhere, but, even in some of the most forbidding examples presented here, there was a commercial optimism that both merriment and wisdom might be happily combined, within the pages of children's literature. Co-published with the Pierpont Morgan Library, The Bibliographical Society of America, and The British Library.

Clouse, Doug MACKELLAR, SMITHS & JORDAN: TYPOGRAPHIC TASTEMAKERS OF THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY.
New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2008 8.5 x 11 inches Hardcover, dust jacket. 176 pages
First edition. This is the first full-length study of the leading American type foundry of the nineteenth century. It is an interesting history of the foundry from both a business and a design point of view. The emphasis is on the design of the hundreds of typefaces that were produced by the foundry, from its inception in the 1860s until its merger with most other American foundries at the end of the century. The author describes (with many detailed photographic illustrations) how changing business conditions and technical improvements in typefounding interacted with changes in public taste to modify, over the decades, the appearance of the typefaces that Americans found in their publications. While this is a study of only one of many American foundries, in many ways MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan can stand as an exemplar of all the rest. It was the descendant of the first successful American type foundry, Binny and Ronaldson, started in Philadelphia in 1796. Extensive business records of the firm exist, as do scores of type specimen books and promotional publications of the foundry. All of these have been used extensively by the author. The scores of typefaces illustrated and described are considered as the ever-changing output of a corporation, with lesser emphasis on the individual creators of each typeface. At the turn of the twentieth century, taste turned away from the florid, ornamented style of the earlier decades. Mr. Clouse has shown in this well-written study that the earlier styles were very successful in their own time and should be judged on that basis. A completely illustrated appendix showing MS&J's patented typefaces is extremely helpful.

New Castle, Delaware and London Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2006 7 x 10 inches hardcover 272 pages
Syriac, a dialect of the ancient Aramaic language, has a remarkable Christian literature spanning a thousand years from the fourth to the thirteenth century, including important versions of the Bible. It remains the liturgical language of several churches in the Middle East, India, and the west, and 'Modern Syriac' is a vernacular still in use today. It is no wonder that this language has a long and rich printing history. The challenge of conveying the beautiful cursive Syriac script, in one or another of its three varieties, was taken up by many well-known type-designers in the letterpress era, from Robert Granjon in the sixteenth century to the Monotype and Linotype corporations in the twentieth, as well as by many lesser-known ones. This study records and abundantly illustrates no fewer than 129 different Syriac types, using archival documents, type-specimens, and the often scattered evidence of the print itself. The Typography of Syriac will be of interest not only to scholars of Middle Eastern languages and scripts but also to all historians of type and printing.
J. F. Coakley is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, and on the staff of Houghton Library, at Harvard University. His private press, the Jericho Press, occasionally makes use of Syriac and other exotic types.

New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2008 8.5 x 11 inches Hardcover 276 pages
First edition. This work is a new bibliography on the Delaware River and Bay by Ben Cohen, the author of similar bibliographies on the Thames and the Clyde. The author first became interested in the Delaware River when he read D.B. Tyler's The Bay and River Delaware, which refers to the Delaware as the "American Clyde." Tyler writes poetically of the Delaware: "Its upper reaches have the beauty and vigor of youth. When, at Trenton, it turns adventurously westward, growing bigger and straighter, it has the solidity and single-mindedness of maturity. At the end, when it swings southward to lose itself in the greater ocean, it takes on the grandeur and dignity of age conscious of its past." This comparison to the Clyde in Scotland, where Cohen was born, ignited the bibliographer's interest in the Delaware. The Delaware River and Bay bibliography includes chapters on photographs, bridges, maps, fish, ports and commerce of the Delaware, containing hundreds of annotated entries, and concludes with four useful appendices, including one on Delaware River shipwrecks. As with his other books, original title spellings have been retained for historical purposes. Author Ben Cohen, F.R.C.S., is a graduate of Glasgow University and bibliographer of The Thames, 1580-1980: A General Bibliography, first published in 1985, and The River and Firth of Clyde, 1549-1993: A Selective Bibliography, first published in 1995.

Collins, John THE TWO FORGERS, A BIOGRAPHY OF HARRY BUXTON FORMAN & THOMAS JAMES WISE.
(New Castle, DE Oak Knoll Books) and (Aldershot): Scolar Press (1992) 8vo. quarter morocco. xiv, 317, x, (iv), followed by a 7 page pamphlet and a 2 page colophon.
First edition, one of 57 special numbered and signed copies (50 for sale) bound thus and containing additional material and available exclusively from Oak Knoll and Maggs. In an introductory note John Collins describes the additional material in this special edition as follows: (1)The life of Alfred Forman by his brother, written in 1926 but hitherto unpublished. In 1973 (Quartich Catalogue 926) Graham Pollard christened Alfred Forman the `third conspirator'. This was on the basis of his initials on the proofs of two chimerical wrappers for Morris pamphlets. Later that year, staying at Waddesdon with Graham, I upbraided him and suggested that initials on two proofs of a wrapper were an uncommonly slender thread on which to convict. Graham agreed and I think we must remove Alfred from his position as third man. (2)Alfred's previously printed sonnet AT BROWNING'S GRAVE 1899. This is without imprint: who printed it? There was a copy in the Forman sale (Sotheby's 10 April 1972, lot 200: £35) described as printed on John Dickinson paper while the B.M. copy was cited as one of five on Whatman. Our copies have only the watermark and seem therefore to be a third variant. Sold with the 1972 lot was a letter from Alfred to his nephew Maurice stating of the leaflet, `It is very scarce indeed and I have only 2 copies that I know of...'. The present bundle comprised 66 copies, and each one is meticulously costed in pencil by Maggs. (3)A colophon claiming a limitation of 50 copies, perhaps from the Browning bibliography of 1897. The fact that 64 copies were in the bundle may be thought to throw some doubt on the limitation.

See More... Cooke, Simon ILLUSTRATED PERIODICALS OF THE 1860S: CONTEXTS & COLLABORATIONS.
New Castle, Delaware, Pinner and London, England Oak Knoll Press, The Private Libraries Association, The British Library 2010 7.25 x 10.75 inches Hardcover, dust jacket 224 pages
The 1860s are considered the "Golden Age" of illustrated periodicals, a time when the "knockabout" humor of the 1840s, which was dominated by illustrators such as Cruikshank, Doyle, and Phiz, gave way to a more considered style grounded in serious artistic principles, allowing for deeper expression and emotion in artistic output. The first book of its kind, Illustrated Periodicals of the 1860s, focuses extensively on the illustrated magazine as a distinct form.

Illustrated Periodicals provides a new and informative approach to the study of "sixties" periodicals, revealing the previously unstudied area of the complex interrelationships between the various parties involved in the production of these magazines: publishers, editors, artists, engravers, and authors. The book considers the effects of these relationships on creative output, both artistic and literary, and in so doing provides a detailed, historical reconstruction of the essential character of the periodicals of that era. The book includes over 120 reproductions of engravings and preparatory drawings, almost all of them original size.

Additionally, the text contains two appendices; the first includes a reflection of the work that goes into collecting and researching these periodicals. The second lists the key illustrators, engravers, publishers, editors, as well as magazines mentioned throughout the text, each including a brief description. This work is an informative and colorful choice for those interested in the history of periodicals, the production of magazines, and art.

Simon Cooke has written widely on the subject of Victorian art and literature. He received his doctorate from Exeter and his teaching qualifications from the Open University and the University of Leicester. Cooke is currently a teacher of English language and literature.

Available outside North and South America from The British Library.

With a Foreword by Jan de Vries New Castle, Delaware Oak Knoll Press 2009 6 x 9 inches hardcover, dust jacket 256 pages
First edition. In The Paradox of Prosperity, Laura Cruz explores the world of the book trades as it was constructed in Leiden in the decades after the Revolt against Spanish rule. She traces the migration of printers from the Southern Netherlands to Leiden and observes how they congregated within the city and sought contracts with the city's new university. But this is only the beginning of a multifaceted analysis of the development of a market-driven industry that eventually is organized under the protective umbrella of a guild. And this guild, in turn, is something other than the traditional guilds of medieval origins. Rather than a bulwark against market forces, the guild of the printers was an instrument to exercise market power. This book offers a fresh look at the role of an institution that is often dismissed, even in the early modern period, as a relic of an earlier time.

Leiden's book trade was unique, exhibiting a specific quality that calls for a specific explanation. Laura Cruz addresses this historical specificity, but goes a step further. Leiden publishing emerged as an industry with a European scope and with national and international competitors. Distinguishing the particular from the general and the accidental or providential from the systematic forces at play within early modern European society is an historian's duty, but one that is often neglected. Savoring the particular is often thought to be enough, indeed, to be the only real purpose of history. Laura Cruz goes further, harnessing her rich historical material to the methods of economic and social history. From this vantage point, she addresses questions that give new insights to the culture of the young Republic that are based not only on the thoughts and dreams of individuals, but also on the behavior and aspirations of groups and the constraints and opportunities presented by institutions.

Laura Cruz is an Associate Professor of History at Western Carolina University. She earned her PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 2001. Her publications include multiple articles on book markets, social networking and death practices in the seventeenth-century Netherlands. She currently serves as the President of the Society for Netherlandic History and the book review editor for the journal Itinerario.
