Second, expanded edition. During the 1960s, scholars and researchers, moved by African-American civil rights activism, began to re-explore the significance of slavery in the American story and rediscovered the importance of the writings of African Americans. These scholars, looking for sources to promote this new scholarship, taught that works on Africa, the rise of slavery and movements against it, and the writings of African Americans were important to the burgeoning field of African-American studies. In 1969, the Library Company of Philadelphia joined the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to mount a major exhibition of their holdings, entitled Negro History: 1553 - 1906. In 1973, on the heels of that exhibition, the two organizations published their holdings in the still-standard bibliography, Afro-Americana: 1553 - 1906, itemizing over 13,000 printed works and nearly 5,000 manuscript entries. Afro-Americana helped identify the two libraries as major resources for African American studies, helping to solidify African-American history in academic and popular culture. This expanded, second edition by Oak Knoll Press, to include upwards of 2,500 additions since the catalogue's 1973 publication, preserves and extends the legacy of this landmark work.

First edition. "Indexing is an anonymous profession. An index may be praised or blamed, but rarely is the indexer named, lauded or shamed," laments Professor David Crystal in his preface to From Flock Beds to Professionalism. This book, however, initiates a change. Hazel Bell presents here brief biographies of 65 individual practitioners, the makers of indexes, from the fifteenth to the twentieth century, considering their working methods, techniques, training, remuneration, their lives and their personalities. Crystal observes, "Although it is the history of indexing which governs the structure of the book, it is the personalities of the indexers themselves which shine through it ... I was unprepared for the range, diversity and sheer brilliance of the personalities lying behind the names." She has been a member of the Society of Indexers for 44 years, serving on its Council as editor of its journal, The Indexer, for 18 of them. In 1997, she was presented by the Society with the Carey Award for services to indexing. She has written many articles for The Indexer and other learned journals. The purpose of this book is to guide the reader through the sequence of operations involved in creating a book bound in leather, or a "fine binding." The author defines a fine binding as a book fully covered in leather, with leather-jointed endpapers, gilt edges, and leather doublures. Although a basic knowledge of bookbinding terms and techniques is assumed, this book is meant for both novice and experienced bookmakers.

The book is intended to be used as an active guide during the process of fine binding. It is arranged into sixteen sections, listing the sequence of operations, beginning with preliminary work and ending with preparing and putting in leather doublures. Each section includes appropriately numbered instructions allowing the user to find his or her place in the sequence of operations with a reference for what step is next. There are also numbered explanatory sections that include a rationale (why you do it) and technique (how you do it). The work includes close to 300 black and white illustrations, four appendices, and a bibliography.

Jen Lindsay is a bookbinder with extensive experience in teaching, lecturing, and writing on bookbinding and the history of the book. She first studied bookbinding at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts, London (1977-1979), and then worked as a freelance bookbinder.
