`t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2002 thick 8vo. cloth 418 pages.
In the great days of Italian fortification literature - the century from Valles first Venetian edition in 1524 to the appearance of Tensini in 1624 - Venice accounted for roughly as many titles as the rest of Europe together. Books on fortification were a natural for the enterprising printer-publishers of this city-state, free from the constraints of small-minded princes and their paranoid insistence on state secrets. This annotated catalogue describes 350 books, published until the time when Venice ceased to be an independent state. It provides massive documentation taking into account the many ghosts created by misprints or over-zealous bibliographers and gives full collations, extensive annotations and locations of copies of all entries. An index of printers and a bibliographie raisonnée of the sources used, appear at the end. The thirty-five illustrations are chosen for their relevance to the subject and range from early bastion traces to emblematic portraits.

One volume with a CD-rom containing the images of the title-pages `t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2003 6.5 x 9.5 inches cloth 792 pages
During the seventeenth century, Holland`s Golden Age, printing and publishing became a flourishing industry. In Leiden, where the presence of a university contributed to that success, Joannes Maire built up, in the course of more than fifty years, a list of at least 527 titles, especially in the fields of medicine, theology and classical philology. Although he is nowadays chiefly remembered as the original publisher of René Descartes's Discours de la methode (1637), his contemporaries knew him better from his numerous editions of works of Desiderius Erasmus. Maire's cooperation in his earlier years as a publisher with the Raphelengii and Thomas Erpenius, professor of Oriental languages in Leiden, and the availability of his books at the fairs of Frankfurt and Leipzig spread his name rapidly in academic circles. Dr Breugelmans's book has several interesting elements. It is the first one to pay attention to a single Leiden printer/publisher on such a large scale. Extensive bibliographical descriptions of Maire's books form the greater part of this publication and the inclusion of their title-pages on a CD-rom is a novelty too. An introduction, giving substantial information on Maire and his authors and on other aspects of his list, such as the phenomenon of 'parallel editions,' supplies valuable further information on the working methods of a printer of that period. The inventory of Maire's estate proved to be an important source for his contacts with his colleagues, among them the Officina Plantiniana in Antwerp. Illustrated.

`t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2002 16 x 9.75 inches cloth 295 pages.
This is the first extensive study of Strasbourg's diverse religious nonconformists beyond 1543, and the first to explore their continuities and discontinuities over two generations. Based on vast archival records in Strasbourg and secondary sources, it moves beyond the political and theological emphases of earlier works to include social history, portraits of village life, and the second generation to 1570. Derksen finds that second generation nonconformists were substantially different from the first. Their social profile changed; from an urban mix of leaders, intellectuals and artisans, they became largely rural folk composed of lower class artisans. Further, in outlook their view narrowed from "radicals" who sought to change church and society at its root to dissenters concerned mainly to survive. At the same time there were continuities. When the revolts of the 1525 Peasants' War were crushed, dissident ideals found new expression in spiritualist, sectarian, and apocalyptic streams. In these streams, into the 1560s and beyond, nonconformists continued their call for social and economic justice and meaningful participation in religion. The book will be of interest to historians of the Early Modern period, the Reformation`s radicals, popular religion, sixteenth-century society and Strasbourg, and to those interested in the free church tradition. "... Strasbourg's relative toleration for religious unorthodoxy was notable. John Derksen `rom Radicals to Survivors' takes an in-depth look at who these radicals were, their beliefs and their connection to the wider world... Derksen traces each known or suspected nonconformist to show the community's depth, diversity and interconnectedness. His book, although heavy in detail and lighter on overall analysis, should be a gold mine of material for anyone interested in this subject" (Amy E. Leonard, in: The Mennonite Quarterly Review, 2004). (Bibliotheca Humanistica & Reformatorica, Vol. LXI)

2 volumes in luxury box `t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2001 16.5x21.5 cm Imitation vellum boards 120 pages (introduction), 568 pages (facsimile)
Towards the end of the 17th century, Hendrik van Deventer was breaking new ground with his work for the obstetrician and the midwife. This became the first work on obstetrics to be written in the Dutch language and was to have a considerable influence on the practice of obstetrics in the 18th century. Van Deventer (1651-1724), a famous physician, had already published a scientific paper in which - thoroughly in the spirit of the Enlightenment He had firmly coupled the theoretical and the practical. His theories are based upon years of practical experience. Until recently, there has been no facsimile edition of his work. To mark the ten years since the inauguration of the Study Group for the History of the Netherlands Association of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, attention is once again focussed on Hendrik van Deventer and his Manuele Operatien, zynde een Nieuw Ligt. The facsimile is based upon the 1746 publication. Van Deventers work is at its most complete in this edition. Included are, additionally, what the author has left behind: Nader vertoog van de swaare baringen and his Nieuwe Aanmerkingen, and in translation from the French Aanmerkingen by Jacques Jean Bruier d'Ablaincourt. The facsimile is published together with a separate commentary, in Dutch, prefaced with three articles covering Van Deventers life and work. In the following eight pieces, the Topics of Manuele Operatien, zynde een Nieuw Ligt are reviewed under the periods in which they were set down and commentaries added. A glossary, together with an extended historical bibliography is included, thus ensuring this work as an essential source of the history of gynaecology and obstetrics in the Netherlands. With 40 plates and 30 illustrations.

See More... Egmond, Marco van COVENS & MORTIER: A MAP PUBLISHING HOUSE IN AMSTERDAM 1685-1866
Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2009 9.5 x 12.5 inches hardcover, dust jacket 600 pages, plus 100 pages on CD-ROM
During almost two centuries from 1685 to 1866 the well-known Dutch map publishing house of Covens & Mortier supplied the then-modern world with maps and atlases. From the late seventeenth century, this company developed rapidly into one of the leading wholesalers in cartographic products. As a result, almost every present-day map lover is familiar with the name Covens & Mortier. Moreover, Covens & Mortier maps can be found in map collections all over the world. There is hardly a cartographic exhibition catalogue to be found in which the name of this Amsterdam firm is not mentioned.

Despite this great reputation, until recently, map historians groped in the dark about the exact development, size, and meaning of this publishing house. To what internal and external circumstances did Covens & Mortier owe its great expansion? How did they sell their maps and atlases? In which cartographic areas did innovation take place? What was the firm's position from an international point of view? Thanks to the results of ten years of intensive research into the publishing activities of Covens & Mortier, these questions can finally be answered. In this richly illustrated book, the definitive research results are presented. Furthermore, an extensive carto-bibliography with original and derivative maps, published by Covens & Mortier, has been added.

Volume 8 in the series Utrecht Studies on the History of Cartography, this work comes with a bibliography, indices, and several appendices on CD-ROM, including a genealogy of the families Covens & Mortier, estate inventories, catalogues of maps and copperplates, and references to Covens & Mortier in contemporary periodicals and booksellers' books. Illustrated with nearly 500 full-color images.

Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2011 9.5 x 12 inches hardcover, dust jacket 750 pages
This publication originated from a decision to embark on researching maps in books. Maps in Books of Russia and Poland is a unique combination of maps, plans, and views that concerns the historical and geographical works of Russia and Poland published in the Netherlands prior to 1800. Both maps and books are elaborately described, analyzed and indexed; much attention has also been given to the authors, engravers and publishers.

Subdividing the maps according to their regions, this book brings to light the specific interrelation between the various works by differing authors. The comprehensive introduction describes the history of Russia and Poland from various points of view for specific subjects and comes richly illustrated with over 100 images. The cartobibliography contains illustrations for each of the 700 maps described and the bibliography features a large number of title pages and portraits. A large folding view of the city of Moscow (12 x 72 inches) by Cornelis de Bruijn (1711) has been added in facsimile at the back of this publication. Summaries in Russian and Polish complete this publication.

This unusual combination of research objectives should appeal to map and book historians and collectors alike.

Maps in books of Russia and Poland is part 13 of the Utrecht Studies on the History of Cartography. The series has been prepared under the direction of the Research Program URU-Explokart of the University Utrecht and is aimed at both researchers and laymen with an interest in these matters.

`t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2000 8vo cloth xxv, 291 pages.
The collection of English books printed before 1801 in the University Library of the Vrije Universiteit at Amsterdam is one of the largest collections of such books outside the English-speaking world, and by far the largest in the Netherlands. The collection numbers 5,600 titles and covers all subjects, but is especially concentrated on (reformed) Protestantism in Great Britain, the Netherlands and America, and the exchange of ideas between these countries. The collection of which the existence is practically unknown, contains many rare items from the 16th to the 18th century. It covers the periods of the well-known and widely used bibliographies of English printed books (STC, Wing, and ESTC); in a large number of cases the catalogue entries correct or supplement these bibliographies. The catalogue is aimed both at a general public of bibliographers, literary and book historians working with books from the STC, Wing and ESTC periods, and at researchers in the Netherlands, Great Britain and elsewhere specialized in church history and the manifold historical and cultural relations between the British Isles and the Low Countries. Hellinga, Lotte CATALOGUE OF BOOKS PRINTED IN THE XVTH CENTURY NOW IN THE BRITISH LIBRARY
BMC, Part XI England `t Goy-Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2007 11.25 x 15.25 inches hardcover 518 pages
Since the appearance in 1908 of the first volume of BMC, the work has been relied on as one of the main authorities on the earliest printing in Europe. Its coverage of early printing from the European countries in which the new technique was successively introduced provides not only extensive bibliographical descriptions, but introduces the material with an analysis of the development of printing in the relevant areas.

The eleventh volume to appear in the series covers England, where printing was not introduced until 1476, a good twenty years after the appearance of the earliest printed books in Mainz. The England volume of BMC responds to the special circumstances of early printing in England by giving particular attention to textual transmission, systematically following each text from source or copy to print whenever possible. Printing-house methods of book-production get full consideration. Notes on further dissemination are extended by an analysis of early ownership (and by implication of readership) taking account of material outside The British Library collection. This is followed by a history of the formation of the collection from 1753 in The British Museum, which began with the great collectors of the eighteenth century, and in which the antiquarian book-trade of this and later periods had an important role. In view of the new focal points of interest, the bibliographical descriptions are more elaborate than in the previous volumes, and include extensive notes on provenance and early readers which are the work of Margaret Nickson. A new forensic element is the systematic investigation of paper used by the printing houses until Caxton's death in 1492, when the nature of production changed. This was undertaken by Paul Needham, who contributes a separate introduction on the trade in paper and paper as evidence for dating and production processes. His investigation, together with the evidence of the use of printing types, underlies the new chronological arrangement which has to be the basis for any interpretation. The resulting chronological list of all printing in England before 1501 is presented in separate tables. The work includes descriptions of 323 copies of books, representing 221 editions of items printed in England, out of a total of 395 known to date, extensive introductions and 52 full-size plates accompanying the descriptions of printing types. With four full-color and numerous black-and-white illustrations of type and watermarks.

De Schouburg in Beeld: Amsterdamse Toneelscènes 1665-1772 Houten HES & DE GRAAF 2012 11.75 x 8.25 inches paperback 240 pages
This book comprises a series of fifteen Amsterdam Schouwburg set prints from the eighteenth century, accompanied by detailed discussions. Most of these prints have appeared individually in Dutch theatre histories or specialist studies and some of them in foreign theatre histories. However, this is the first publication that includes the complete series, in colour and, what is more, explained from every point of view.

The series of prints in this book gradually came about after the Centenary of the Schouwburg in 1738. In this publication, they are supported by illustrations that can be connected to the set prints and are equally relevant when studying the theatre history of that time.

The book determines the facts about these prints, including whether or not, as well as how, the draughtsman, the engraver, or the colourist has interfered, be it for artistic or for social reasons. This means that in the background of this presentation of beautiful prints - which is this book's prime objective - the fundamental tension between reliability and manipulation will constantly be present.
