The purpose of this book is to guide the reader through the sequence of operations involved in creating a book bound in leather, or a "fine binding." The author defines a fine binding as a book fully covered in leather, with leather-jointed endpapers, gilt edges, and leather doublures. Although a basic knowledge of bookbinding terms and techniques is assumed, this book is meant for both novice and experienced bookmakers.

The book is intended to be used as an active guide during the process of fine binding. It is arranged into sixteen sections, listing the sequence of operations, beginning with preliminary work and ending with preparing and putting in leather doublures. Each section includes appropriately numbered instructions allowing the user to find his or her place in the sequence of operations with a reference for what step is next. There are also numbered explanatory sections that include a rationale (why you do it) and technique (how you do it). The work includes close to 300 black and white illustrations, four appendices, and a bibliography.

Jen Lindsay is a bookbinder with extensive experience in teaching, lecturing, and writing on bookbinding and the history of the book. She first studied bookbinding at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts, London (1977-1979), and then worked as a freelance bookbinder. She was a bookbinding tutor and Program Convener for the BA Bookbinding and BA Calligraphy programs at Roehampton Institute, West London (1983-2001) and then bookbinding tutor at The City Literary Institute, London (2001-2005).

The political active Boyle was one of the so-called "Lost Generation" of American expatriate writers in Europe between the World Wars. The guide includes 261 illustrations, including his designer's marks to help identify his pieces. First edition. Longmans is the oldest commercial publisher in the United Kingdom, founded in London in 1724 by Thomas Longman. Asa Briggs's history is told within the context not only of the book trade, but also of national and international social, economic, intellectual, and cultural history. From the start, the Longmans chose titles likely to have a long life. These included Roget's Thesaurus and Gray's Anatomy, which have gone through many editions. First edition. This comprehensive bibliography describes the American cookbooks in the Gernon Collection housed at the Lilly Library. AMERICAN BOOKS and its British/European counterpart, A MATTER OF TASTE, fully describe over 2,300 works in gastronomic literature and are testaments to the collecting achievements of Dr. and Mrs. John Talbot Gernon. The collection was donated to the Lilly Library in 1979 by Dr. and Mrs. Gernon, and their European collection of cookbooks were added in 1984. A MATTER OF TASTE, which describes the collection's British and European works, was published in 1990. The Gernon Collection also includes books on agriculture and gardening, brewing, distilling and wine-making, health and diet, household management, and the operation of restaurants and hotels. Famous American cookbooks include a first edition of Amelia Simmons' AMERICAN COOKERY (1796), a second edition of Mary Randolph's THE VIRGINIA HOUSEWIFE (1825), Robert Roberts' THE HOUSE SERVANT'S DIRECTORY (1827), the first book by an African-American to be commercially published; and Eliza Leslie's SEVENTY-FIVE RECEIPTS FOR PASTRY, CAKES, AND SWEETMEATS (1828) among many others. The publication of A MATTER OF TASTE marked a closure for Dr. Gernon regarding British and European cookbooks, but it encouraged his interest in American books, which he continued to purchase and donate to the Library until his declining health took its toll. His last gift was the first edition of Elizabeth Kirkland's SIX LITTLE COOKS (1877) in May 1993. However, the Lilly Library has been able to add over 300 more American works since the Gernon collection first arrived. In addition to rare and famous cookbooks, the collection's depth and breadth are also of great importance. Many 19th-century popular works are represented in multiple editions, providing bibliographers and culinary historians with publishing histories of these books. Since the collection documents many aspects of culinary customs and traditions, it also provides a social history of the United States. Books on food and drink from the 18th and early 19th centuries and the early years of this country originated mostly from America or Britain. European cooking, including German, Swedish, Czech, and Polish, was only introduced after 1840 when upheavals overseas brought these new cultures into American society. Regional tastes, such as New England, Southern and, Southwestern, are also represented. Illustrated.

The author has chosen examples of formal writing that show a coherent and reasonably consistent relationship between methods of tool use and letter formation, making the construction of a script much easier to grasp in practice. He has also made the effort of selecting writing without idiosyncrasies of style.

The opening words of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address are familiar to many, but the exact wording of the rest of his speech has been contested over the years. Soon after Lincoln spoke at Gettysburg on November 19, 1863, variations of what he said were printed in a number of publications. Generations of commentators have since puzzled over these, wanting to know which one is the most accurate. This short book continues that quest, first by cataloguing and annotating a sequence of key printings published in the six months after he spoke and by investigating their sources, with reference to the five surviving manuscripts of the Address in Lincoln's hand as well as other documents. John Carbonell concludes that not only is a certain printing the most accurate, as many have thought, but more controversially, that there is no compelling reason to believe that a single word in it is mistaken.

John Carbonell is an antiquarian book and print dealer specializing in nineteenth-century American and Canadian printed ephemera. He was born in Malaysia, grew up in Australia, and graduated from universities in England and the United States before moving to Canada and becoming a Canadian citizen. Mitchell was a man of astoundingly diverse interests whose collection was not merely for show or posterity, but was, in fact, his own personal reading library. When was it that someone decided that books might be written and published for child readers? It's fair to say that some kinds of text-alphabets, fables, the Lord's Prayer, may have been seen as fundamental to the process of learning to read from the beginning of book making, but when did children come to be seen as a readership for whom special provision should be made? The child as the audience for books in the English language is the subject of this bibliographical study, which had its origins in an exhibition held at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. From this beginning, Felix de Marez Oyens and Brian Alderson have compiled Be Merry and Wise and shown how certain creative talents, driven by a sense of purpose, or a wish to make some money, attempted to appeal directly to children, and how the publishing industry came to realize that this audience might prove to constitute a profitable market.
In conducting their survey, which is centered upon the books themselves, mostly drawn from the holdings of the Morgan Library, the authors not only plot the chronological development of children's book publishing from almost random beginnings to the diversity of the early Victorian period, they also show how publishers adapted their trade methods to exploit this new market. Sweetness and light did not prevail everywhere, but, even in some of the most forbidding examples presented here, there was a commercial optimism that both merriment and wisdom might be happily combined, within the pages of children's literature. First edition. This is the first full-length study of the leading American type foundry of the nineteenth century. It is an interesting history of the foundry from both a business and a design point of view. The emphasis is on the design of the hundreds of typefaces that were produced by the foundry, from its inception in the 1860s until its merger with most other American foundries at the end of the century. The author describes (with many detailed photographic illustrations) how changing business conditions and technical improvements in typefounding interacted with changes in public taste to modify, over the decades, the appearance of the typefaces that Americans found in their publications. While this is a study of only one of many American foundries, in many ways MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan can stand as an exemplar of all the rest. It was the descendant of the first successful American type foundry, Binny and Ronaldson, started in Philadelphia in 1796. Extensive business records of the firm exist, as do scores of type specimen books and promotional publications of the foundry. All of these have been used extensively by the author. The scores of typefaces illustrated and described are considered as the ever-changing output of a corporation, with lesser emphasis on the individual creators of each typeface. At the turn of the twentieth century, taste turned away from the florid, ornamented style of the earlier decades. Mr. Clouse has shown in this well-written study that the earlier styles were very successful in their own time and should be judged on that basis. A completely illustrated appendix showing MS&J's patented typefaces is extremely helpful.

Syriac, a dialect of the ancient Aramaic language, has a remarkable Christian literature spanning a thousand years from the fourth to the thirteenth century, including important versions of the Bible. It remains the liturgical language of several churches in the Middle East, India, and the west, and 'Modern Syriac' is a vernacular still in use today. It is no wonder that this language has a long and rich printing history. The challenge of conveying the beautiful cursive Syriac script, in one or another of its three varieties, was taken up by many well-known type-designers in the letterpress era, from Robert Granjon in the sixteenth century to the Monotype and Linotype corporations in the twentieth, as well as by many lesser-known ones. This study records and abundantly illustrates no fewer than 129 different Syriac types, using archival documents, type-specimens, and the often scattered evidence of the print itself. The Typography of Syriac will be of interest not only to scholars of Middle Eastern languages and scripts but also to all historians of type and printing.

First edition. This work is a new bibliography on the Delaware River and Bay by Ben Cohen, the author of similar bibliographies on the Thames and the Clyde. The author first became interested in the Delaware River when he read D.B. Tyler's The Bay and River Delaware, which refers to the Delaware as the "American Clyde." Tyler writes poetically of the Delaware: "Its upper reaches have the beauty and vigor of youth. When, at Trenton, it turns adventurously westward, growing bigger and straighter, it has the solidity and single-mindedness of maturity. At the end, when it swings southward to lose itself in the greater ocean, it takes on the grandeur and dignity of age conscious of its past." This comparison to the Clyde in Scotland, where Cohen was born, ignited the bibliographer's interest in the Delaware. The Delaware River and Bay bibliography includes chapters on photographs, bridges, maps, fish, ports and commerce of the Delaware, containing hundreds of annotated entries, and concludes with four useful appendices, including one on Delaware River shipwrecks. As with his other books, original title spellings have been retained for historical purposes. First edition. In The Paradox of Prosperity, Laura Cruz explores the world of the book trades as it was constructed in Leiden in the decades after the Revolt against Spanish rule. She traces the migration of printers from the Southern Netherlands to Leiden and observes how they congregated within the city and sought contracts with the city's new university. But this is only the beginning of a multifaceted analysis of the development of a market-driven industry that eventually is organized under the protective umbrella of a guild. And this guild, in turn, is something other than the traditional guilds of medieval origins. This book offers a fresh look at the role of an institution that is often dismissed, even in the early modern period, as a relic of an earlier time.

Leiden publishing emerged as an industry with a European scope and with national and international competitors.
