The Caxton Club was founded in Chicago in January 1895 by fifteen bibliophiles. Its objective was the "literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books" and "the occasional publishing of books designed to illustrate, promote and encourage these arts." One century later, the Club remains dedicated to this objective. It brings together a community of individuals who share the love of books and provides them a forum to educate one another on their content and design; and about the joys of reading them. In addition, their activities and existence have contributed a significant chapter to the history of book collecting in America with its changing tastes and the evolution of fine printing and fine binding over 100 years in Chicago. Caxton Club historian, Frank J. Piehl, offers a taste of the artistic, intellectual and literary atmosphere of Chicago from which the Caxton Club merged. According to Piehl, early bibliophiles concerned themselves not only with a book's contents, but also with the physical aspects of a book. In its 100 years, the Club has published 60 books that are distinguished by their content and design. Nineteen are important historical works, sixteen describe the history of printing and bookbindings, seven relate to bibliophiles and book collecting, and the remaining eighteen comprise a miscellany of poetry, literary works, plays, an opera and other items. Anyone who is interested in the history of book collecting, printing and bookbinding will enjoy this work. Designed by Caxtonian Bruce Beck and printed by R.R. Donnelley & Sons, the Caxton Club publishes this history of the Club that includes an up-to-date bibliography of the Club's publications, as well as biographies of Caxtonians who have contributed prominently to the advancement of the book and the club. Fifty years ago, David Mearns at the Library of Congress wrote a twenty-page overview of the basic process that led to the publication of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Here, for the first time in a detailed and readable account focusing on Lincoln's personal involvement, Dave Leroy writes the full story with original correspondence, contemporary newspaper accounts, and photos and illustrations of the day to carry the reader from the dejected debater of 1858 to the surprise president of 1860 who rode a political bestseller to the White House. In 1954, Illinois historian Harry Pratt located and described eighteen inscribed copies of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. In this new work, 42 signed volumes are identified.

Perhaps the last remaining Lincoln mystery is also explained at length: did Lincoln make one or two paste-up scrapbooks of the original newspaper texts of his and Douglas' verbatim debate remarks? If only one existed, why did a New York newspaper account hint at another in December, 1860? If there were two, what became of the second? Like a lawyer before a jury, Leroy marshals the facts to let the reader decide. Ultimately, Mr. Lincoln's Book asks the reader to resolve the century and a half old debate: was Lincoln an author? Some argue that he wasn't, but Leroy leads us to conclude that Lincoln, in more ways than not, was author of the book publishing the debates.

It is a rare day when something novel is published about Abraham Lincoln's life and work. Yet 20,000 volumes later, Mr. Lincoln's Book is an unknown study, well researched and compellingly told. The printed volume is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing a complete copy of Lincoln's scrapbook of the debates, copies and transcriptions of Lincoln's correspondence, and some related political cartoons and photographs.

A former prosecutor, attorney general, lieutenant governor, and United States Nuclear Waste Negotiator, Dave Leroy has written and spoken about Lincoln for thirty years. He holds an Honorary Doctorate of Law degree from Lincoln College and serves as chairman of the Governors Council of the United States Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. This is his first book-length text about Lincoln. Leroy lives with his wife Nancy in Boise, Idaho, and Bordeaux, France.

The idea for Other People's Books was conceived in 2007 when Steve Tomashefsky, then President of the Caxton Club, actively supported a project to create a collection of essays revealing the stories behind association copies. Even earlier, Caxton Club members recognized the importance of provenance during its exhibition of "books interesting through their associations," in 1896. This enthusiasm for association copies continued to grow even outside of the Caxton Club as newspapers such as The New York Times began publishing articles related to these unique pedigree books.

Other People's Books provides stories of fifty-two presentation copies from 1470 to 1986, narrating how each book came to be inscribed. Containing 112 illustrations, this work is a lively historical account of the journey of twenty-four books from institutional collections and twenty-eight from private hands. Set in England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States, these books range in topics from astronomy, ornithology, political science, and psychology, to art, film, history, and literature. While many of the books are presentation inscriptions directly from the author, others were inscribed by someone who was closely connected with the author. The book highlights the owners of these volumes now, many of whom are famous names in literature and history or book scholars and collectors.

This book is a creation of the Caxton Club, an organization of collectors, publishers, designers, and librarians. Many Caxton Club members worked together to assemble this work, with a jury of members hand-picking the fifty-two essays seen in this collection. They edited, designed, and indexed the book. Submission requests were made to numerous book organizations across North America, as well as to curators of university library special collections. An introduction by G. Thomas Tanselle is included.
