Bossange, Hector CATALOGUE DE LIVRES FRANÇAIS, ANGLAIS, ALLEMANDS, ESPAGNOLS, GRECS ET LATINS, ITALIENS, PORTUGAIS, ORIENTAUX, ETC. ... SUIVI DE PRIX COURANTS.
Paris Hector Bossange, Maison de Commission 1845 thick 8vo. contemporary half morocco, top edge gilt (xvi), 984 pages
A massive catalogue of 984 pages, the vast bulk of which (pp.1-802) is devoted to books as noted in the title. Some of this is very interesting, especially the section on the arts and architecture, which includes some rare and expensive books. The second part is of even more interest as it contains sections on maps, globes and spheres, astronomical instruments, and "machines typographiques" (with lithographic illustrations of the Stanhope Press, the Columbian Press, the Presse Française and the Machine à Glacier). This is followed by eight leaves of type specimens and "Les Articles pour la Reliure" which includes four folding plates of shiny glazed black paper printed in gold showing 'Fers a Doreur.' The two final plates are more fers a doreur and include two fully blocked spines, a fully blocked cover and other stamps, rolls and lines. These are in perfect condition and have great appeal as well as obvious documentary value for historians of 1840s binding. The letterpress lists also include skins for binding with prices. The final leaf of this section is Daguerreotypes, both full apparatus and plates. Contemporary bookplates of the Franklin Library of Boston and the later 19th century bookplate of the Lawrence Public Library. Rubbed, hinges rubbed but sound.

(Bossange, Hector) CATALOGUE DE LIVRES FRANCAIS, ANGLAIS, ALLEMANDS, ESPAGNOLS, ITALIENS, PORTUGAIS, ORIENTAUX ETC,, ETC,, ETC. SUIVI DE PRIX COURANTS.
Paris Hector Bossange 1845 8vo. later cloth xiv, 875-984, 802, (4), xi-xvi, 985-1221+(1) pages
Sales catalogue. Preface in French, English and Spanish. This a catalogue of all the great works in many languages that Hector Bossange claims to be able to procure in a modern edition in a variety of bindings. In his preface, he says that this catalogue is intended as a tool specifically for foreign book collectors and their agents to ease the ordering process of important books. Many of the books he lists do not have prices because, "being out of print, are only to be obtained with some difficulty or at second hand, and of which the prices vary according to their rareness and their condition." The back section contains only books pertaining directly to stationary and the arts and sciences. Bossange was also a procurer of objects other than books for foreign collectors. Ex-library copy with, title page repaired, and with perforated stamp, cover corners show wear. No plates.

Boynton, Henry Walcott ANNALS OF AMERICAN BOOKSELLING, 1638-1850
New Castle Oak Knoll Books 1991 8vo. cloth. (13), x, 209 pages.
Reprint of the first edition, with a new introduction by Joseph Rosenblum. This work first appeared in 1932 to celebrate the 125th anniversary of its publisher, John Wiley and Sons. Boynton was interested in the colorful figures that populated the book world of early America and tells their fascinating story in an entertaining manner. His account begins with the establishment of the Cambridge Press in Massachusetts Bay in 1638 and ends in 1850, by which time the production and distribution of the book had entered the modern age. This is one of the best accounts of early American bookselling, printing and publishing.

Bristol, Roger Pattrell. INDEX OF PRINTERS, PUBLISHERS, AND BOOKSELLERS INDICATED BY CHARLES EVANS IN HIS AMERICAN BIBLIOGRAPHY.
Mansfield Centre, CT Martino Publishing 2005 8vo. cloth. iv, 172 pages.
Reprint of the 1961 first edition published by the Bibliographical Society of America (Besterman 5196). This useful bibliography is a tool for use in conjunction with Evans, American Bibliography. Bristol has provided an index of printers, publishers, and booksellers to help navigate Evans when author-title information is not clear, or not properly transcribed. Bristol suggests that Evans made many attributions of author, publisher, and place of publication which have been found to be poor hunches. The index is an attempt to correct some of these errors. Names of printers and publishers are brought together under place, with no attempt to establish relationships or to differentiate between the individuals of the same name. Bristol was involved in updating Evans even further through supplements and indexes intended to make the information provided in Evans more accurate and accessible.
