  Desnos, Robert MINES DE RIEN
(Paris) Louis Broder (1957) square small 8vo. loose signatures in paper-covered boards, slip case 29, (9) pages
Text in French. Limited to an edition of 115 printed on vélin de Rives. This book contains seven poems by French poet Robert Desnos. Desnos was part of the surrealist movement in the 1920s, but later denounced surrealism's ties to communism. He produced poetry even after his capture and imprisonment by the Gestapo in 1944 for being a member of the French Resistance. He died in 1945 from typhoid contracted during his time in the concentration camps. This book is illustrated by four original color prints and signed on the colophon by French artist André Masson. Influential in the surrealist movement, Masson produced paintings, book illustrations, and stage settings from the 1920s until his death in 1987. He was interested in "the destiny of mankind" and his work often reflected the violent or erotic images he saw during his experiences in World War I and the Spanish Civil War. He was awarded France's Grand Prix National des Arts in 1955. Newspaper article announcing Masson's death, photocopy of book entry for Masson, and Zabriskie Gallery schedule of exhibitions including one of work by Masson laid-in. Minor wear to boards, slip case scuffed, soiled in places, worn around edges.

(Dickens, Charles) Johannsen, Albert PHIZ, ILLUSTRATIONS FROM THE NOVELS OF CHARLES DICKENS.
Chicago University of Chiago Press (1956) small oblong 8vo. unbound signatures. xi, (i), 442, (2) pages
First edition. A complete set of reproductions of the 516 duplicate plates etched by Hablot K, Browne (Phiz) for seven of Dickens' major novels, beginning with The Pickwick Papers in 1836 and continuing through A Tale of Two Cities in December, 1859. It was Browne (1815-1882) and not George Cruikshank who made most of the illustrations that have given so apt a picture of the Dickensian world. Browne etched duplicate, triplicate, and even quadruplicate steel plates in order to keep pace with the printing process of the letterpress. Because they were etched, many of the duplicate plates show important differences which the author points out in his accompanying text. Illustrations throughout. A set of the unbound signatures of this book.

(Doolittle, Amos) O'Brien, Donald C. AMOS DOOLITTLE: ENGRAVER OF THE NEW REPUBLIC
New Castle Oak Knoll Press and the American Historical Print Collectors Society 2008 8.5 x 11 inches cloth with dustjacket 192 pages
As a copperplate engraver, Amos Doolittle (1754-1832) played an important role during the American colonies' war for independence and the early years of the new nation. He completed his apprenticeship in New Haven, Connecticut, around 1770 and continued to work actively in that city for over sixty years. His first known attempts are the views of the battles of Lexington and Concord--four plates that he engraved, printed and published in 1775. Even today, Doolittle's first attempt, although crude in workmanship, continues to be often reproduced.
Doolittle did general engraving and printing throughout his career. Maps for atlases and illustrations for books became his specialty, but he also engraved maps and broadsides that were published separately. Scholars have identified more than 600 Doolittle engravings, both signed and unsigned. During the course of his career, one of Doolittle's major accounts was with Philadelphia publisher Mathew Carey (1760-1839). This book contains excerpts from correspondence between the two, never published before, which reveal much about business practices of the time.

This book was written to complement similar works on Doolittle's contemporaries, including Paul Revere. There are chapters on various types of his work, including his tune-books, maps, illustrations, bank notes and more. The book also includes two useful appendices, cataloguing books containing his engravings and references to him and his work. Co-published with the American Historical Print Collectors Society, Amos Doolittle is a valuable contribution to the study of American engravings.
