Ashley, Mike THE AGE OF THE STORYTELLERS.
British Popular Fiction Magazines 1880-1950 New Castle, Delaware, and London, UK Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 2006 9.5 x 7.5 inches cloth 320 pages with 72 color and 60 b/w illustrations
The years from 1880 to 1950 were the golden age of storytelling, seeing the creation of such famous fictional characters as Sherlock Holmes, Fu Manchu, Father Brown, Hercule Poirot, even Winnie the Pooh. This was the age of Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, John Buchan, A.E.W. Mason, Sapper, Rudyard Kipling, H.G. Wells, Arnold Bennett and so many more. It was an age that coincided with the glory of the popular monthly illustrated magazine, typified by The Strand, which set the standard for popular fiction with the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. The Strand soon encouraged rivals and imitators such as Pearson's Magazine, The Windsor, The Royal, Pall Mall, The Idler and many more.
This is the first reference guide to consider these magazines in detail, providing coverage of 144 titles, seventy in full-length entries, charting their contribution to and influence upon popular literature. There are illustrations reproducing covers and features from every magazine, with 72 color images, including many magazines that are now extremely rare. In addition to much new information this book also considers the collecting significance of these titles and will be of importance to collectors and bookdealers as well as literary researchers and bibliophiles.
The author has spent over forty years researching popular literature in all its forms. He has published over seventy books including the biography of Algernon Blackwood, Starlight Man, studies of the development of the science-fiction magazine, The Time Machines and Transformations, and the award-winning Mammoth Encyclopedia of Modern Crime Fiction.

Austin, Gabriel THE LIBRARY OF JEAN GROLIER: A PRELIMINARY CATALOGUE.
New York The Grolier Club 1971 8.5 x 11 inches hardcover 137 pages
Jean Grolier can be considered a window to the history of French culture. He was interested in Italian and French scholarship, music and publications, antiquarian books, book collecting, and more. The Grolier Club has been named after this "prince of bibliophiles." This book is a groundbreaking study of the legendary bibliophile and patron of printing. Colin Eisler provides an informational and historical introductory study on Jean Grolier and the Renaissance that includes a full-page color illustration of Grolier's Painted Arms and Emblematic Device. It also contains eight full-page black-and-white illustrations including an Italian plaquette binding and various forms of Grolier's signature.

The bibliography includes books and essays that discuss Grolier bindings in different collections, in addition to contemporary references to Jean Grolier. The extensive catalogue lists books from the library of Jean Grolier, providing author, title, editor, imprint, size, provenance, booksellers, catalogues of private libraries and auction sales, and catalogues of institutional libraries. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author, Greek authors are listed in their English form, Roman authors in Latin form, and others in their colloquial form. The book was designed by Greta Franzen and printed by the Halliday Lithograph Corporation.

  Avetta, A. NOZZE MARCHESINI-VELO
(Padua Tipografia dei Fratelli Salmin) 1909 oblong 8vo. self-paper wrapper xx pages
Limited edition of 40 numbered copies. The author begins with an address to the groom, saying that he decided to compile the following bibliographic notes on manuscripts of ethical philosophy conserved at the library of the University of Padua, on the occasion of the wedding. Lest this seem strange, the author vaguely notes his friend's connection to and love of such manuscript works before launching into his bibliographic essay and transcriptions of two of the texts treated. Loosely inserted is a commemorative book label that indicates that this volume came from the reference library of H.P. Kraus purchased by Oak Knoll Books at the auction sale. Irregularly faded on all pages.
