(Bookplates) Tattersfield, Nigel BOOKPLATES BY BEILBY & BEWICK, A BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY
London and New Castle The British Library and Oak Knoll Press 1999 large 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. 384 pages.
Forty years before the turn of the 18th century, a small, prestigious bookplate workshop was established, the likes of which were never to be seen again after its employment of one man: Thomas Bewick. To this day, the works of the bookplate shop of Beilby & Bewick are highly collectible and valued in the antiques world. This account offers several hundred bookplates engraved on copper and wood, executed and printed in the workshop over a period of 89 years. It is quite the most extensive and thorough study of this subject in its use of primary sources. The author's lively enthusiasm and careful scholarship have combined to produce a valuable and truly pioneering work on a subject clouded by speculation and optimistic attribution until now. Nigel Tattersfield has taken full advantage of the recently-opened archives of Beilby & Bewick to reveal a vast range of work, from banknotes and inscriptions in silver, to the making of type punches and bottle moulds. The workshop's surviving records are unique in their diversity and quantity. In recent years, the records have been used in the study of engraved silver, pottery transfers, and the preparatory studies for Bewick's wood engravings. Bookplates is fully illustrated, with over 300 examples, and its wealth of biographical information on the owners of the bookplates represents an important contribution to the social history of the north of England.

Mansfield Centre Martino Publishing 2007 large 8vo. cloth. (xiv), 128, x, 34, (3) pages, with 50 additional pages of plates.
Reprint of the 1918 edition which was limited to 300 numbered copies. The first part (Coll. Marks), by Louis Fagan of the British Museum, first appeared in 1883 and contains 671 "marks" for book owners (individuals or institutions): Signatures, initials, monograms, stamps, stars, crosses, coats of arms, intertwined forms and "other marks and devices," all reproduced in facsimile. The accompanying list indicates, to the extent known, the collector or owner to whom the mark refers and gives information on the sale of the collection to which the mark pertains. Fagan identifies about three-fourths of the marks with regard to ownership, with auction information for perhaps one-half. With index. A following "supplement" lists fifty variants of the marks already reproduced. The last part ("new contributions") is an addition by the editors of this edition, Milton Einstein and Max Goldstein, and lists 205 additional marks, many of them from America (e.g. M. Cassatt, J.P. Morgan), following the format of part one, although a smaller portion of marks are identified.

Holzenberg, Eric THREE GOLD BEZANTS, THREE SILVER STARS: THE ARMS OF THE GROLIER CLUB 1884-1984
New York The Grolier Club 1999 5.5 x 8.5 inches hardcover 62 pages
The arms of Jean Grolier are extremely recognizable in book collecting. He used them on bindings, opening leafs, and other leafs of his texts. Now, visitors to the Grolier Club see Jean Grolier's arms in carved stone at the Street entrance, in plaster over the fireplace, and in various other places throughout the Club.

This book has divided the Grolier arms into two categories: the Grolier arms used in publications and the arms used in ex libris. They are roughly grouped chronologically by date of original publication and each illustration is accompanied by a short explanation of when the device first appeared, and by whom it was designed. It contains a history of the arms of the Grolier Club since 1884, and Kit Currie provides a prefatory essay titled, "The Arms of Jean Grolier."

The book includes 22 illustrations, many printed from the original blocks, with three tipped in bookplates. A preface by Eric Holzenberg, club publications, and club bookplates are also presented. It was written in Herman Zapf's Renaissance roman and italic types. Design and typography were by Jerry Kelly.
