The standard work on artists' monograms, illustrated with more than 30,000 facsimiles. An indispensable tool to identify artists who signed themselves only by their monogram or similar devices. Thousands of these artists were also book illustrators, hence this work's importance for books as well as fine art in general. Nagler begins by giving an exact facsimile of the monogram, followed by the artist's name, a biographical sketch, list of works, and books illustrated by him. This edition also includes an index of artists' names at the end of the fifth volume.
