Text in German. Volume 16 of Sämtliche Werke (Collected Works) of Sealsfield. Reprint of 1847 edition. Charles Sealsfield, pseudonym used by Karl Anton Postl (1793-1864) was born in Poppitz, Moravia, evidently fled the Austrian Empire, and was in New Orleans by 1823. He wrote both novels and non-fiction on the United States-Mexican borderlands about the time of the Texas War for Independence and the annexation of Texas into the United States in 1845. This work, The Cabin Book, was first published in 1841 in Zurich, published in New York in 1844. Its publication encouraged the German migration to Texas according to the website of the Texas State Historical Associaton (www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/fpods). Both volumes include endnotes on the text. Foldout map of Texas by Dr. Ferdinand Roemer tipped in. TSHA biographical sketch of Sealsfield (Postl) laid in.
