First edition. The past half century has been one of the most active and provocative periods in the long history of textual criticism. In this series of six critical essays that survey theoretical writings in the field since 1950, the eminent textual scholar G. Thomas Tanselle chronicles a significant moment in intellectual history and offers a guide for thinking through the basic issues of textual criticism and scholarly editing. With index.

THE PENTATEUCH.

Text in Hebrew. The title is on the case. A micrographic reproduction of the Torah or the Pentateuch--the first five books of the Old Testament--reduced from a Sefer-Torah, rolled in a scroll format. The micrographic scroll is inserted in the original silk covered case, gilt-stamped with the symbol of the Decalogue. Case is worn at its edges. The periodical Christian Work: Illustrated Family Newspaper, v. 62, p. 84, July 15, 1897, noted, "Lately, there has been circulating in England a marvel of the micrographic art in the shape of a Sepher Torah so small it can be inserted in the waistcoat pocket. It is the work of a Jewish scribe, J. Sopher of Paris."
