BIBLIOGRAPHIE DER ORIGINALAUSGABEN DEUTSCHER DICHTUNGEN I...
by Schulte-Strathaus, Ernst
First edition (Besterman 916). The significance of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's (1749--1832) contribution to literary and societal developments in the eighteenth century cannot be overstated. Goethe wrote fiction, non-fiction and plays, was a courtier and studied natural philosophy. He was a major component of Sturm und Drang, a literary movement that celebrated the individual and examined man's struggle with subjectivity and his place in contemporary society--an idea that stood in stark opposition to the rational ideal established in the Enlightenment. Goethe's profound influence motivated Schulte-Strathaus to examine the works that were published concerning the Sturm und Drang movement in Goethe's time. This bibliography lists 750 first editions of these publications, many entries with some commentary. Arranged alphabetically by author. The titles are fully transcribed line for line. Includes reproductions of a number of title pages. Loose bookplate indicates that this copy was purchased from the collection of H.P. Kraus. Cover irregularly faded.
