First edition, later printing. Part of the Sewn and Pasted, Cloth or Leather series. The sixth book on book design and bookbinding from the book artist K.A. Smith, with the assistance of the binder and teacher F.A. Jordan, covers the making of books from the selection of paper from the standpoint of binding requirements up to and including finishing. Three bindings suitable for nonprofessional (but not unskilled!) binders are emphasized: pamphlet binding in boards, flat back (cased) binding, and tight back (rounded and backed) quarter leather. There are many photographic illustrations and clear drawings of structures, materials, processes and finished products. With notes, a glossary, indexes and a list of paper and leather suppliers.

First edition. (NCBEL 568) Author's second book, which includes most of his writings to date. Somerville, also spelled Somervile, was a British writer who, after studies directed toward a career at law, lived the life of a country gentleman, indulging in the field sports that were to make up the subject matter of his best-known poems, especially "The Chace" (1735). (Dictionary of National Bibliography and Encyclopedia Britannica.) Lacks free front endpaper. Offset to the facing pages from the glue on the pastedowns. Some scattered foxing. Hinges starting.
