First edition, one of 300 numbered and autographed copies. A landmark in the history of typography, the book is designed by master American typographer Goudy (1865 -1947). Set in University of California Old Style type, also designed by Goudy and used for the first time in this volume. The typographer describes his methods of type design and production in chapters such as:"The First Types"; "What Type Is"; "The Design of Types"; "Details of Construction"; "Making the Patterns"; and others. Some of the chapters written originally as magazine articles and revised for this book. Black and white illustrations throughout. Produced with collaboration of Samuel T. Farquhar, manager of University of California Press. With small booklabel of former owner in corner of back pastedown. Well preserved copy.

Copies of newspapers with publication announcement and presentation of a copy to the Queen laid in. Scuffed at edges and along spine. Slight tear in cloth at bottom rear foreedge. Inscription on front free endpaper. Foxing on endpapers and on paper guards.
