Kemble was the foremost philologist of his day, and this text is taken from the recently discovered eight-page manuscript which was dated 1830, three years before his edition of Beowulf. No trace of the actual dictionary itself is known, but this specimen is a fitting tribute to Kemble's work in etymology.
