The first volume is the Oriental Series and includes Egyptian and Assyrian, other scripts of Asia and the ancient Meximan writing of America; the second is the Classical Series and includes examples of the origin and the development of the Greek and Latin scripts; the third is the Medieval Series and includes illuminated books, Bible manuscripts, and historical documents; the fourth demonstrates illuminated manuscripts of the Orient, and autograph writings of modern times. Each large volume has a number of separate folders with text describing the contents loosely inserted. Each plate is accompanied by a text page. Edges of pages chipped; foxed throughout.
