First edition. Greenwood (1831-1926) was an English social critic, concerned about the plight of those in London's workhouses and the working poor. Frontispiece and thirty-six illustrations, tinted and drawn on wood by Ernest Griset, Edward Hodnett notes his "good animal and insect illustrations for each of the three far-fetched and sometimes offensive narratives by James Greenwood."
